Radiolab

WNYC_Radiolab_logo.svgRadiolab is a WNYC nationally syndicated (in America) hour radio show that is also distributed via podcasting. Broadcasting since 2002 Radiolab is a show that takes big scientific and philosophical topics/questions and tries to answer them in succinct ways with a bit of quirky humour and outlook as well. Hosted by Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich they attempt to answer these big issues using the help of professional academics and stand alone reports.

Radiolab is unique with its approach to broadcasting because it seemingly defies the associated norms of a radio show and instead through various music, sound effects and design it takes the listener on a journey in order to solve the shows question. This could be for example in an episode about snowflakes an expert could be talking about the intense design of a single for it to subtly cut to a two minute long abstract piece of music that defines what it is to be a snowflake. This innovative manner of presenting a story has proved to be successful with roughly 1.8 million listeners tuning in for each episode (with the majority being podcasts downloads).

For The Lessons Behind The Lectures I would like to take some of the creative elements of Radiolab and to incorporate into my podcast. How this would manifest it self into the final product is that in the opening and closing themes for the show I would try to make them be as immersive as possible and make the audio as wide as possible for the listeners.

Here is an example of an episode:
